New Swift - The Big Heart in a Small Package

Size doesn't matter for a car with such a big heart

Carmall.com - The old Suzuki Swift was doing probably everything right. The car has been well-received and loved, with the second generation creating envy, as well as well-deserved admiration, from competitors, automotive journalists, and the public in general. So, it comes to no surprise that the Swift has collected 67 Car of the Year awards in 26 countries, with two millions sold worldwide.

All I can say is that the latest generation Swift is going for perfection, but that may be a vague disposition. So, I'll simply say that this car is better than its predecessors and more. The automotive trend is met with, while etching itself as a fun, economical, and stylish small hatchback.

In addition to a good mix of inner and outer looks, the Swift also combines the Japanese obsession for quality with European-inspired driving dynamics. After spending a long weekend with the car, I find that the Swift may be small, but it's groovy as it can be.

The Exterior

Suzuki seems like they are playing it safe with the new Swift, which is reasonable. After all, if something is doing good why bother it at all. No significant changes have been made. In fact, some could even mistaken the new for the old Swift if a means of comparison is absent.

The looks may be of great similitude to the old version, but still there are tweaks to the front. Swept back larger headlamps create a more energetic and dynamic impression. The grille also underwent some modification, incorporating the strong design of the Kizashi, Suzuki's leading model.

But what was kept is the sporty side profile. The glass profile that progressively tapers along the front and rear windows is quite reminiscent of the good-looking side profile found on the Nissan Juke.

Changes at the back are minor too, but still unique. The new tail lamp are sharper round the top, and stretched out further to the rear door. And as a change from the red all-over case of the old Swift, the new tail lights have a white case at the centre of the red blob, which provide a sporty accent to the car.

In addition to fine outer aesthetics, the new Suzuki Swift is larger too, almost 100mm longer and slightly wider. However, this growth will perhaps go unnoticed, unless you're a Swift die-hard fan who recognizes everything and every millimeter of the car. Overall, it remains stylish with minor but distinctive enough changes that still manage to differentiate the new Swift from those usual boxy hatchbacks on the streets. It's clear that Suzuki has stayed true to the car's formula of success.
